DescriptionMap of the countries of Oceania. They are not labeled; instead, they are marked with letters and numbers that correspond with a key published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, depicted with shading, rivers and islands.
Label TextIn contrast to the 1841 edition of the Key to Mitchell's Outline Maps, which placed considerable emphasis on the history of exploration in the Pacific basin, the 1857 edition concentrated instead on the physical and political geography of the region: the names of the islands, their climate, soil, inhabitants, and government. The map itself is very similar to the one published in 1841, except that an insert at the upper right includes an enlarged detail of the Sandwich or Hawaiian Islands, suggesting growing interest in that island group. Although Hawaii was still an independent kingdom under King Kamehameha, more and more Americans were moving to the islands and gaining influence there.
NotesCartographic Note: No scale

Constituent Note: Mitchell's Series of Outline Maps were first issued in 1841 by Mather, Case, Tiffany & Burnham of Hartford, Connecticut and Augustus Mitchell of Philladelphia.. In 1857, the maps were updated and resissued. This time the printing was done by a new lithography firm, Bingham & Kelly and the maps and the accompanying key were published by O.D. Case & Co., both in Hartford.
