DescriptionMap of South America, with the countries outlined but not labeled. There are circles and numbers instead that correspond with a key published separately from the map. Natural features depicted include elevation, conveyed through hachure marks, rivers and islands.
Label TextSome changes in the boundaries between Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil are apparent in this 1857 map of South America when it is compared with an earlier version issued in 1841. Patagonia appears on both as a separate entity, "thinly inhabited by independent tribes." Both maps were intended for the teaching of geography in schools. The later map includes much more detail, including many more cities and geographical features, the names of which the students were presumably expected to memorize.
NotesCartographic Note: 3 7/8 inches equals 600 milesConstituent Note: Mitchell's Series of Outline Maps were first issued in 1841 by Mather, Case, Tiffany & Burnham of Hartford, Connecticut and Augustus Mitchell of Philladelphia.. In 1857, the maps were updated and resissued. This time the printing was done by a new lithography firm, Bingham & Kelly and the maps and the accompanying key were published by O.D. Case & Co., both in Hartford.
