DescriptionHalf-length miniature portrait of a young man with blue eyes, light brown curly hair and side burns. He is wearing a dark green jacket, cream colored waistcoat, white shirt with a stock or cravat. The miniature is set in a pinchbeck frame with a loop for suspension. On back of frame, a lock of hair, woven in a basket pattern, is set under an oval piece of glass.
Label TextDavid Huntington was born 1 March 1784, in Marlborough, Connecticut. This portrait may have been made about the time of his marriage to Ann Carly in 1808. The initials "A.H." on the back of the suspension loop are probably Ann's initials. Huntington was active as a bookseller and publisher in New York City where, according to museum records, he was successful in his business endeavors. He died in Norfolk, Virginia in February of 1838, on his way home from a business trip abroad.
NotesMedium Note: Pinchbeck is an alloy of copper and zinc, used to imitate gold. (Ozzone 3/21/2013)Status
