DescriptionLooking west at the Old State House, a brick and brownstone federal style building with a cupola with a clock, dome, flag pole, and a statue of an allegorical figure of Justice on top, partially concealed by trees. Arched entrances on the ground floor. A grassy lawn with paved sidewalks and a fountain at the center is surrounded by trees and an iron fence. Horse-drawn carriages, possibly cabs, lined up next to the sidewalk, several stone hitching posts visible, also a water trough at the corner. The street in the foreground is American Row, at right commercial buildings are visible on State Street, one with a sign reading: "JOB PRINTING / OFFICE" At left is Central Row. In the background at left, the granite Second Empire style building with columns, pediments, tablatures, and rounded towers, is the building of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company. The spire in the distance is from the Pearl Street Congregational Church. Several utility poles and wires are visible. Street lights on the sidewalks.



NotesSubject Note: The Old State House was erected in 1796 to the designs of Charles Bulfinch. It served as the State Capitol until 1878 and as Hartford's city hall until 1915. The Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company building was designed by Bryant & Rogers in 1869.
