DescriptionA group of men and at least one boy are gathered on top of a steep traprock ridge to watch the firing of gun. In some photographs, the gun is being prepared for firing; one photograph appears to depict the actual firing of the gun. Most photographs show the men and boy looking over a precipice into the valley below. One photograph includes a truck or jeep. One photograph is a group portrait of those present. One photograph shows the cliff from below.
NotesSubject Note: On August 10, 1939, a United States Coast Guard gun was used to throw an 1100-foot cable from the top of Meriden Mountain to the bottom. The cable carried telephone and power lines to the WDRC Experimental Station on top of the mountain. The station had made some previous trial broadcasts and was scheduled to begin making regular broadcasts in September. (Finlay 2/1/2014)
