DescriptionPhotographs of the spring freshet of 1876 show the flooding along the Thames and Shetucket Rivers and in downtown Norwich. One photograph shows the Norwich and Worcester Railroad Yard almost completely under water. Other photographs show debris piled up above the iron railroad bridge. Another shows men in a boat outside the store of John C. Perkins and a Gents Dining Room. Other photographs show damage following the flood, including damage to a factory.
Part of the John S. Craig Collection.
NotesConstituent Note: Morgan Safford ran a newspaper, periodical, book, and stationery store in Norwich, Connecticut. Threre is no evidence that he was a photographer, so it is likely that he sold the photographs of the 1876 Flood in his store but did not take the photographs even though his imprint appears on them.
