NotesSubject Note: Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) was born in Kinderhook, New York in 1782. He served as Vice-President under Andrew Jackson from 1832 to 1836. He himself was elected President in 1836; he was President from 1837 to 1841. He was defeated by the Whigs for re-election in 1840 and defeated again in 1848 when he was a candidate on the Free Soil ticket. He died in 1862.
