DescriptionMap of the countries of Oceania. They are not labeled; instead, they are marked with letters and numbers that correspond with a key published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, depicted with shading, rivers and islands.
Label TextBetween 1838 and 1842, the United States Exploring Expedition conducted extensive surveys in the areas of the Pacific shown in this map, but the expedition was still in progress and the results of their work yet to be published when this detailed map of "Oceanica" was produced for use in school geography classes. The questions in the accompanying Key assumed an extensive knowledge of history as well as geography on the part of the students; for example "What historical events can you repeat, especially concerning Botany Bay colony, Sandwich, Friendly, and Society Islands?"
