DescriptionMap of Europe. The countries are not labeled; instead, they are numbered. There are also smaller numbers and circles that correspond with a key published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, depicted with hachure marks, rivers and islands.
Label TextThe fact that two separate maps of Europe were included in Mitchell's Series of Outline Maps suggests the importance that the European geography and history held in the curriculum of mid-nineteenth century American schools. This, the second of the two maps, was four times as large as the first map, and included substantially more detail. Students who used this larger map in their study of geography were expected to know the ancient Latin names as well as the modern names of the countries and major cities. The capital of France was to be identified as Lutetia as well as Paris; the country was to be identified as Gallia as well as France. Students were also expected to be familiar with the ancient names of seas and rivers and mountains.
NotesCartographic Note: Scale: About 1 3/8 inches equals 10 miles (?)
