DescriptionMap of Europe, with countries delineated with broken solid lines. The countries are not labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, conveyed through hachure marks, rivers and islands.
Label TextEurope in the 1840s was very different from today. Central Europe was a patchwork of small German states, and Turkey was still very much a presence in eastern Europe. The importance of European geography and history in the studies of the American schoolchildren for whom this map was designed is suggested by text in the separately published Key, which describes Europe as "one of the most interesting portions of the globe" and goes on to explain how "the combination of art and science has removed the apparent distance between the two hemispheres... the inhabitants of each are brought to the proximity of neighbors."
