DescriptionMap of South America, with countries delineated with broken solid lines. The countries are not labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, conveyed through shading, rivers and islands.
Label TextMitchell's Outline Maps were intended for use in geography to schoolchildren. Teachers would ask questions based on the information included in each map. A separately published key identified the towns, cities, and geographical features, and provided sample questions meant to engage the students' interest. For South America, these included "What metals and minerals are found in South America?" "What is said of the character of the inhabitants?" and "What of their employments and diversions?" The questions appear to assume an extensive knowledge of South America on the part of the students.
