DescriptionMap of Indiana and Illinois, with boundaries in broken solid and dotted lines and pink watercolor. Two solid lines, one in each state, are colored red, and two small solid lines, one in each state, are colored green. The boundary lines are marked with broken solid lines and pink watercolor. None of the places on the map are labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include rivers.
Label TextThe green line snaking across the state of Indiana is the Wabash & Erie Canal, a project funded by the Indiana Mammoth Internal Improvement Act of 1836. Unfortunately, the overall project proved a disaster for the state, which narrowly avoided bankruptcy in 1841, the year this map was issued for use in teaching geography to school children. Like Indiana, Illinois has only one canal and one short railroad on this map, but the city of Nauvoo (number 15 on the map), founded by the Mormons in 1839, was experiencing a population boom, quickly growing to become the second largest city in the state. Nauvoo would be virtually abandoned in 1846, when Brigham Young led the Mormons west to what would eventually become the state of Utah.
