DescriptionMap of Ohio and part of Lake Erie. The boundary lines are marked with broken solid lines and pink watercolor. There is a network of lines, colored green, and one colored red, that show the state's network of canals. None of the places on the map are labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include rivers, the lake and islands.
Label TextThis map which was designed to teach geography to schoolchildren shows a remarkable network of canals crisscrossing the state of Ohio. Canals were located in forty-four of Ohio's eighty-eight counties and provided a reliable means of transportation in this relatively flat state, linking Ohio's major cities to the eastern markets. Railroads would ultimately replace the canals as the primary means of transportation, but they were much slower in coming. Only two short railroads appear on this 1841 map.
