DescriptionMap of Kentucky and Tennessee. The boundary lines are marked with broken solid lines and pink watercolor. None of the places on the map are labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, conveyed with hachure marks, rivers, and what appears to be swampland.
Label TextThe two large states of Kentucky and Tennessee stretch between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River and had historic ties to both the South and the West. As in most southern and western states, development lagged behind the Northeast. Only two short railroads appear on this map. The Lexington & Ohio Railroad, begun in 1832, ran from Lexington, Kentucky to the Ohio River, and was the first railroad west of the Alleghenies. Tennessee's first railroad, the LaGrange & Memphis Railroad, was still under construction in 1841, when this map was issued to help teach geography to schoolchildren. .
