DescriptionMap of Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. The boundary lines are marked with broken solid lines and pink watercolor. There are several solid black lines that have been colored red or green. None of the places on the map are labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, conveyed with hachure marks, rivers and islands.
Label TextArkansas had only been a state for five years when this map was issued in 1841 for use in teaching geography to schoolchildren. Both Arkansas and Louisiana had been part of the former Louisiana Territory, which the United States acquired from France in 1803. Mississippi had entered the Union in 1817, when the Territory of Missisippi was subdivided to form two states: Mississippi and Alabama. The names of the river towns, which students were expected to memorize, resonate strangely: twenty years later, during the Civil War, Baton Rouge, Port Gibson, and Vicksburg would all be the sites of major battles.
