DescriptionMap of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The boundary lines are marked with broken solid lines and pink watercolor. There are several solid black lines that have been colored red or green. None of the places on the map are labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, conveyed with hachure marks, and rivers.
Label TextMitchell's Outline Maps were primarily intended to be used to teach geography to school children, but teachers were also advised to call the attention of their students to the historical events that took place in the countries or states that they were studying, since this would produce "a lively and profitable interest." On this 1841 map of New Jersey, Pennyslvania, and Delaware, it is possible to chart the locations of the battles of Trenton, Princeton, and Germantown. Gettysburg appears as one of the major towns in south central Pennsylvania, the site of Gettysburg College; its role as a battlefield still lay more than twenty years in the future.
