DescriptionMap of the state of New York. The boundary lines are marked with broken solid lines and pink watercolor. There are several solid black lines that have been colored red or green. None of the places on the map are labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, conveyed with hachure marks, rivers, Lake Ontario, part of Lake Erie, and part of the Long Island Sound.
Label TextFlags mark the sites of battles and little buildings mark the sites of institutions of higher learning in this 1841 map of New York State, intended for teaching geography to students in the classroom. New York was well-supplied with both. Battles were fought there during the French and Indian Wars, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812. Colleges and universities are scattered across the state, from Columbia College in New York City and West Point on the Hudson to Union College in Schenectady, Hamilton College in Clinton, and the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institute in Hamilton. The network of green and red lines represents the expanding system of canals and railroads.
