DescriptionMap of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The boundary lines are marked with broken solid lines and pink watercolor. There are several solid black lines that have been colored red or green. None of the places on the map are labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, conveyed with hachure marks, rivers, islands, part of the Atlantic Ocean, and the Long Island Sound.
Label TextMassachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island often got grouped together on nineteenth-century maps because the group of three states fit well on a standard sheet of paper. This format was adopted for Mitchell's Outline Map, even though it allowed for less detail than in some some other states that fit the rectangular format better. Perhaps the most striking thing about this particular map is the network of green and red lines representing canals and railroads which already by 1841 crisscrossed the states, connecting most of the major towns and cities. Mitchell maps were used in teaching geography to school children. The features corresponding to the numbers and letters on the maps were identified in a separately printed key.
