DescriptionMap of Vermont and New Hamsphire. The boundary lines are marked with broken solid lines and pink watercolor. There are several solid black lines that have been colored red. None of the places on the map are labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, conveyed with hachure marks, rivers, and lakes.
Label TextThe boundaries of Vermont and New Hampshire in this 1841 map, whcih was used by school children to learn geography, correspond to the boundaries as they exist today, but in 1841, this was a fairly recent development. The northern portion of New Hampshire, long the subject of dispute between the United States and Great Britain, from 1832 to 1835 had been a small, unrecognized, independent republic, the Republic of Indian Stream. The area was still identified as Indian Stream as recently as the 1840 United States Federal Census. Indian Stream is not identified on this map; the letter E refers to the Connecticut Lakes, the headwaters of the Connecticut River, which were central to the disputed area.
