DescriptionMap of the state of Maine. There are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, conveyed through hachure marks, rivers and islands.
Label TextTo those familiar with Maine's present boudaries, this 1841 map which was used to teach students geography presents certain anomalies. From 1838 to 1842, the United States and Great Britain were engaged in the Aroostock War, a non-violent dispute over the border between Maine and what was then called British North America. In this map, Madawaska and Grand Manan Island, which were both ultimately became part of Canada, are shown as part of the United States.
