DescriptionMercator projection of the world with all of the continents except Antarctica, with country and, in the case of the United States, state divisions rendered in broken dotted lines. Ocean currents are depicted on the map with clusters of short broken dotted lines and an arrow indicating the direction in which the current travels. Broken solid lines between points on land indicate travel or discovery routes, and include the names of the places and the distance between them. The Equator, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and the Arctic Circle are labeled (the Antarctic Circle is not on the map). The Sargasso Sea, above the Tropic of Cancer in the Atlantic Ocean, is labelled "Marine Vegetation." There are red lines dividing the borders of the mainland United States from Alaska, Canada and Mexico, as well as along the Ural Mountains, the Caucasus Mountains and between Egypt and what is labeled on the map as "Arabia." Relief is conveyed through hachure marks.
Label TextThe Beers family of map publishers had deep roots in Fairfield, County, Connecticut, although their businesses were located in New York City and Chicago. James Botsford Beers was born in Newtown, Connecticut on October 16, 1811. His firm, J. B. Beers & Co. published maps and county atlases, beginning in 1870. His son, Frederick W. Beers, also published maps and atlases, under his own name, and a distant cousin, John Hobart Beers, had a map publishing firm in Chicago.
