Label TextWesleyan University played a prominent role in the development of Middletown, Connecticut, and appears prominently in this 1874 map. Founded in 1831 as a Methodist college for men, Wesleyan was named for John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. In 1872, shortly before this map was published, Wesleyan began admitting women, one of the first colleges in the United States to do so. This map was originally part of an atlas published by F. W. Beers & Co.
