DescriptionCommercial building with what appears to be a brownstone facade with Corinthian fluted columns, Corinthian fluted pilasters, balustrades on two levels, two reliefs: "1835 / Rebuilt 1869." and "Exchange Bank". Sign in an alley at left reads: "The Hartford / Electric Light Co. / Battery Dept." A ladder leans against the brick building, which is the Hartford Courant Building. A man stands on the steps of the bank. At right, a stone and brick building with windows has striped awnings that say "Longs". A sign toward bottom reads: "New Engl[and]..." An advertising board says: "Hartford", and "Joe Welch / Morning, / noon and night". Painted on brick wall: "...Extra / Ales and Lager".
NotesSubject Note: The 1909 Hartford City Directory lists the Long Brothers Hotel as being at 78-82 State Street. It was run by John C. Long and Timothy J. Long, and in the advertisement, it boasts that it "contains Mirror Place Dining Rooms".
A Hartford City Directory lists a Helco site located at the rear of 70 State Street.
