Label TextOn October 5, 1858, the following notice appeared in the Hartford Daily Courant: "Remember the large sale of real estate auction at 10 o'clock today. A large number of building lots belonging to the estate of David Watkinson, deceased, on Windsor, Portland, Avon, Canton, and North Main streets, will be sold at auction, and undoubtedly great bargains may be obtained. The sale commences on Windsor street, south of Avon street." This map shows the property being offered for sale. David Watkinson, who was born in England in 1778, spent most of his life in Hartford, where he amassed a considerable fortune as a merchant and businessman. He died in 1857, leaving the equivalent of $100,000 to establish a reference library "accessible at all reasonable hours to all residents and visitors." Today located at Trinity College, the Watkinson Library remains an important resource for scholars.
