DescriptionThe stone beaux-arts Municipal Building, with round-arched windows, balustrades with urns, and Corinthian columns and pilasters, is at the right. An American flag flies at half-staff from a flagpole on the roof. The Morgan Memorial, the Aetna Insurance Company building, and the tower of the Travelers Insurance Company are visible in the background. Commercial buildings line the left side of the street. A sign reads: "LUNCH". Electric street lights, trees, and trolley poles line the street. A trash can is beside a light pole at the right. A fountain and a statue are in front of the Municipal Building. Trolley wires cross overhead, and trolley tracks are in the paved street. A sign on the wires reads: "SECTION BREAK / POWER OFF". Men and women, some blurred from movement, walk on the sidewalks and cross the street. A policeman in uniform stands in the street. Automobiles, one the license plate number "28-696", are parked beside the curbs.
NotesSubject Notes: The Municipal Building was completed in 1915 to designs by architects Brooks & Davis with Palmer & Hornbostel to serve as Hartford's city hall. The Morgan Memorial was designed by the New York firm La Farge & Morris. The partners in the firm were Christopher Grant La Farge and Benjamin Wistar Morris. Travelers Tower was completed in 1919 to the designs of Donn Barber.
