DescriptionThe stone Gothic revival Wadsworth Atheneum museum building is at the left, with square towers, crenellations, recessed flattened pointed arches, and a porch. Lettering above the entrance reads: "1842 / WADSWORTH ATHENEUM". The Renaissance revival Morgan Memorial and the beaux-arts Municipal Building are to the right. Trees, bushes, and a statue are on the grassy lawn. A fire hydrant, utility poles, and trolley poles are on the paved sidewalk. Automobiles are parked at the side of the paved street. Trolley tracks are in the road.
NotesSubject Note: The Wadsworth Atheneum, American's oldest free public art museum, was the work of the architectural firm of Town and Davis. The facade was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis and the plan by Henry Austin, who also served as the supervising architect for the project. The building was completed in 1844.
The Morgan Memorial was designed by the New York firm La Farge & Morris. The partners in the firm were Christopher Grant La Farge and Benjamin Wistar Morris.
The Municipal Building was completed in 1915 to designs by architects Brooks & Davis with Palmer & Hornbostel to serve as Hartford's city hall.
