DescriptionMap of the parking lots and venue locations for the Special Olympics in Stratford, Milford, Orange, West Haven, New Haven, Hamden, North Haven, East Haven, Oly Lyme, New London, Branford and Guilford, Connecticut. To the right is an inset map of downtown New Haven, and below the main map is a list of spectator parking lots. At the very bottom of the sheet is a legend explaining the lines that represent town and state roads, highways, town boundaries and railroad tracks.
Label TextOne looks in vain for parking lots on early Connecticut road maps. Drivers were simply expected to park somewhere on the street. By the end of the twentieth century, the staggering number of automobiles made parking lots and parking garages a vital necessity. Large events such as the Special Olympics World Games required extensive advance planning to accomodate the cars of all the participants and onlookers. Over 7000 athletes from 143 countries took part in the Ninth Special Olympics World Games in New Haven, Connecticut on 1-9 July 1995. The Special Olympics are an international sports competition for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
