DescriptionWoman's petticoat of cream-colored wool flannel. It is pleated all the way around into the 1 1/2-inch-wide waistband, but more deeply in the back to concentrate the fullness there. The edges of the waistband and center back opening are embellished with feather stitching in cream-colored silk thread. A scalloped lace in wool crochet edges the bottom. Feather stitching encircles the petticoat at the hem.
NotesHistorical Note: According to a letter written by the donor (see object file 1972.19.2), his great grandmother was Elizabeth Howard Whitman (Mrs. Samuel Whitman, Jr.) (1786-1852). She died too early for this petticoat to have belonged to her, but she may been the mother of the Elizabeth Whitman who owned it. If that is the case, the donor would be the grandson of the woman who wore this petticoat. (Hudson 3/6/2006)Status
