DescriptionMap of Old Windham Street in Windham, Connecticut, oriented east-west on the sheet with north pointing toward the left side and the Shetucket River to the west. Running parallel to the river is an unnamed railroad line. Numbered land lots are shown, with information derived from a variety of sources about the owner's name, dates (death dates, dates of purchase or occupancy, etc.), and a letter/number combination that refers to the book and page number where the information was found. The dimensions and number of acres is also provided. There is a legend in the bottom right corner.
Label TextThe Bingham family had deep roots in Windham, Connecticut. Benjamin, Elijah, Gideon, Jonathan, Joseph, Samuel, and Thomas Bingham all appear as property owners on this map showing early settlers of the town. Theodore A. Bingham was born in Andover, Connecticut in 1858. He attended West Point, began his military career in the army corps of engineers, and went on to become a brigadier general. After leaving the army, he served briefly as Commissioner of Police in New York City. In 1920, he gave a large collection of maps to the Connecticut State Library. He evidently drew this map about that date.
