DescriptionFull-length profile portrait of a woman wearing a wedding gown, a crown, earrings, and a veil. The dress is trimmed with layers of lace and has a train. Her left hand rests beside a book on a table covered with a fringed tablecloth. A monogram consisting of the letter N surmounted by a crown and surrounded by laurel leaves is woven into the cloth. A fluted column and drapery with tassels are in the background. A fountain and a palace (possibly the Tuilleries) with a flag flying from its central pavilion are visible in the distance.

NotesSubject Note: Eugenie Marie de Montijo became the Empress of the French after marrying Napoleon III in 1853. Eugenie was not his first choice for marriage, because she did not bring any political advantage or prestige to France. Napoleon III only married her after a more suitable match could not be found. Eugenie was Empress until 1870.On View
