DescriptionTopographical (contour) map of Connecticut and Long Island Sound, with latitude and longitude lines and coordinates. The legend provides information about the features found on the map. Color is used to denote built-up areas, state parks and state forests. Interstate highways, U.S. highways, state highways and other roads are marked with lines of varying widths, and the names of cities are sized according to population. Town names are also given, with broken lines separating towns and counties. The three bordering states, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, are named on the map but no geographical or political features are given.
Label TextThe 1960s saw the growth of the interstate highway system, urban renewal and development, and a new concern for providing and preserving open space for the growing population. The Connecticut Turnpike (now I-95) had been completed in 1958, but I-91 and I-84 were still under construction in 1967, when this map was published. The extent of urban sprawl along these highway corridors is clearly indicated by the bright yellow areas of the map. Several new state parks, including Bluff Point, Dinosaur, Haley Farm, and Talcott Mountain, opened in the 1960s, and cities and towns also acquired land for recreation and conservation. Some of these recent additions to the Connecticut State Park system do not appear on this map.
