DescriptionMap of Norwich, Connecticut, depicting the locations of the first house lots and including the names of their owners. The Thames River runs along the town to the south.
Label TextFrances Caulkins (1795-1869) was born in New London, Connecticut and spent much of her childhood in Norwich, where she was a pupil of the future Lydia Huntley Signourney. Caulkins was the author of many religious tracts as well as histories of Norwich and New London. Her History of Norwich, Connecticut, from its settlement in 1660, to January 1845 was printed in Hartford and published in Norwich in 1845. Caulkins later revised and updated her text, pushing the story of the town backwards to its "possession by the Indians" and bringing it forward another twenty years to 1866. Caulkins herself may well have drawn this simple map, versions of which were used to illustrate both editions of her book.
