DescriptionWoman's polonaise (overdress) of cotton printed with a striped design in black. The polonaise is shaped with princess seaming; it opens the entire length of the center front, and fastens with twelve mother of pearl disk-shaped buttons (one is missing.) The neckline is high and round, and is finished with a 1 1/2-inch wide self-fabric ruffle. The shoulderline is dropped, and the sleeves, which are cut with an upper and lower seam in the coat style, are very slightly gathered into the armscye. The sleeves end with a scalloped ruffle of self-fabric around the wrist. The armscye is piped. The bottom edge of the polonaise is scalloped and finished with a binding of self-fabric. The polonaise is unlined. There is a mended hole, done by the original owner, between the shoulders. The hole was backed with original dress fabric, with the print carefully matched so that it is almost unnoticeable.
