NotesSubject Note: Richard Wilbur (b. 1921) is an American poet and literary translator. After receiving his MA from Harvard University in 1947 and teaching there for several years, he began teaching at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut in 1955. He remained at Wesleyan until 1977, when he became Smith College's writer in residence. While at Wesleyan, he helped found the poetry series of the University Press in 1959.

Wilbur published "The Beautiful Changes and Other Poems," his first of eleven volumes of poetry, in 1947. He has won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry twice, once in 1956 for "Things of This World" (which also won the National Book Award), and once in 1989 for "New and Collected Poems." In 1959, he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science, and in 1994 was award the National Medal of Arts. He is also known for translating from the French plays by Moliere, Jean Racine and Pierre Corneille.
