NotesSubject Note: Reed Whittemore (1919-2012) was a poet, biographer, critic, journalist and professor. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and attended Yale as an undergraduate. While there, he and his roommate started the literary magazine Furioso. Whittemore's first volume of poetry was published in 1946, and in 1947, he became a professor of English at Carleton College, a position he held until 1966. In 1964 and again in 1984, he was awarded the title of United States Poet Laureate. He also received the National Council on the Arts Award and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award of Merit Medal.On View
