DescriptionPortrait of a young girl wearing a short-sleeved dress and necklace. She is standing on the seat of a straight chair with her hand resting on a photographer's headrest. The oval mat has a floral border surrounded by a diaper pattern. The dark red velvet pad has a design of leaves and scrollwork. The case has a central floral design surrounded by a cartouche within a scrollwork border. The same design appears on both upper and lower parts of the case.
NotesSubject Note: According to a note, the subject could be either Caroline Lyman Collins, Henrietta Atwood Collins, Edith Electa Allen, or Lucy Mather Brace. She seems to be the same child that appears in 2011.63.187, 2011.63.188, and 2011.63.189. She somewhat resembles the four Allen daughters and could be a member of that family. (Ruocco 3/21/2012)

Related Note: The headrest in the photograph would normally have been used to support a sitter's head during the long exposures required for early portrait photography. (Finlay 4/3/2012)
