DescriptionBust-length portrait of a man with short dark hair wearing a high collared shirt. The mat is oval with a border of grape vines. The dark purple velvet pad has what appear to be peacocks in the right and left borders surrounded by scrollwork. The upper cover of the case has a floral design in a cartouche within a scrollwork border. The lower cover has an interlaced border.
NotesSubject Note: The daguerreotype is based on a painted portrait, probably a miniature, probably dating from the 1820s or 1830s. Through the man appears to bear some resemblance to John Allen, he may be a member of an earlier generation. The daguerreotype is part of a collection of portraits of members of the Allen, Collins, and Hamersley families. (Finlay 4/3/2012)
