DescriptionPlain cotton petticoat, quilted in a diamond grid pattern for a depth of 11 1/4 inches around the bottom. Above this, it is quilted with parallel vertical lines, two inches apart. The quilting is done with a white cotton thread at about 6 stitches per inch. The backing of the petticoat is also plain, undyed cotton. The bottom edge is bound with a twill-woven cotton tape. The top of the petticoat skirt is pleated into the waistband, which closes with a bone button. Four other bone buttons are stitched to the waistband, probably for fastening to suspenders, which were commonly used in this period with such heavy petticoats.
