DescriptionOval portraits of the first twelve presidents of the United States are grouped around a reproduction of John Trumbull's painting of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence.. The lower frame of the painting bears the inscription "THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE JULY 4TH 1776." An eagle with a shield and six American flags is in the center of the frame; the eagle holds a banner that reads: "THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES." Female allegorical figures representing Justice (on the left, with scales and a sword) and Liberty (on the right, with a Liberty cap on a pole) stand on high plinths. The frames of the presidential portraits are inscribed as follows: "JAMES MADISON." "JOHN ADAMS." "GEORGE WASHINGTON." "THOMAS JEFFERSON." "JAMES MONROE." "JOHN Q. ADAMS." "ANDREW JACKSON" "MARTIN VAN BUREN" "WM. H. HARRISON." "ZACH. TAYLOR." "JOHN TYLER." "JAMES K. POLK."
NotesConstituent Note: Humphrey Phelps, Edward H. Ensign, Timothy Ensign, and Horace Thayer were all sometimes associated with E. B. & E.C. Kellogg, and also with one another, but this particular partnership between the four men is not otherwise documented and may represent an informal association for the sole purpose of publishing this print.
