DescriptionA row of carriages and buggies is lined up near the wall of a stone prison complex. Two women stand near the vehicles. Additional women and at least one man stand on a viewing platform on the roof of the nearest building. Most of the structures are in ruins. Vines, probably ivy, grow on the outer wall. A stone guard tower is at the right. A grassy lawn and a dirt road are in the foreground.
Label TextBy the late nineteenth century, the ruins of Old Newgate Prison in East Granby had become a popular tourist destination. Note the row of carriages at the left and the sightseers on the viewing platform on the prison roof.
