DescriptionPart of a horse-drawn buggy is visible in the left foreground. The ruined walls of a prison complex are in the background, beyond a grassy lawn. Vines, probably ivy, grow on the wall at the left. A frame house and stone guardhouse are at the right. Evergreen trees, probably pine trees, are behind the prison.
NotesBy the late nineteenth century, the ruins of Old Newgate Prison in East Granby had become a popular tourist destination. A carriage used by visitors to reach the prison is the left of this photograph.
