DescriptionAn elderly woman is sitting in an ornately carved wooden armchair holding an open book in her lap. She is wearing a dress with lace trim and a cameo brooch pinned to the collar. A small federal style mirror surmounted by a carved eagle is on the wall behind her. She is reflected in a large mirror on the wall at the left.
NotesSubject note: Sophia Hamersley was born in 1842. She was the youngest daughter of William James Hamersley, the sister of Elizabeth, Ogden, and William Hamersley. A daguerreotype showing her as a young girl (2011.63.81) was taken while she a pupil at the "Farmington School," presumably Miss Porter's School. (Ruocco 3/10/12)Status
