DescriptionA large mortar and cannon balls is on a high granite base in the foreground. Plaques are on the two visible sides of the base. Paved sidewalks lead through grassy lawns to the Connecticut State Capitol in the background. Two American flags fly from high flagpoles.
NotesSubject Note: The Connecticut State Capitol was completed in 1878 to the designs of architect Richard M. Upjohn. The Petersburg Express was used by the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery in the siege of Petersburg, Virginia in 1864 and 1865. It was erected on the Connecticut State Capitol Grounds as a monument to the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery in 1902. (Finlay 2/3/2012)
