DescriptionViews of Hartford record the extensive flooding that accompanyied the Hurricane of 1938. Floodwaters fill many streets, Bushnell Park, and the meadows along the Connecticut River. The Bulkeley Bridge, the tower of Travelers Insurance Company, the old Y.M.C.A. building, and the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch are visible in some photographs. Signs read: "THE PLYMPTON & HILLS CORP." "SOCONY" "P. BERRY & SONS" "STATE" "SUNKIST". Billboards and water towers are on some rooftops.

NotesSubject Note: Although the note on the back of 2011.335.12 expresses uncertainty as to whether the photographs depict the Flood of 1936 or the flood accompanying the Hurricane of 1938, they clearly depict the latter. The Flood of 1936 took place in March, when there were no leaves on the trees. The Hurricane of 1938 took place in September, when the trees were fully leafed out. (Finlay 11/2/2011)
