DescriptionThree-quarter-length portrait of a man wearing a coat, vest, pants, shirt, and necktie. He is seated in an upholstered armchair and holds a sheet of paper, apparently a speech or letter, in his left hand. A column is in the left background. Two books are at the foot of the column, apparently on a table. Drapery with two tassels is behind the chair.
Label TextStephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were rival candidates in the crucial 1860 Presidential election. E.B. & E.C. Kellogg issued portraits of both men, which served as political campaign posters. If Douglas had won the election, the line "Democratic Candidate for " [Sixteenth President of the United States] would have been removed from the printing matrix and a new edition of prints showing Douglas as Sixteenth President would have been issued.
