NotesSubject Note: Hannibal Hamlin (1809-1891) was Vice President during Abraham Lincoln's first term, from 1861-1865. He started out as a Jacksonian Democrat, but in 1856, he switched over to the Republican Party, because he could no longer tolerate the Democrats' proslavery policies. He was seen as too radical by 1864, and he was not nominated as Lincoln's running mate for his second term.
