DescriptionWhite cotton drawstring bag, constructed with side panels shaped with tapered sides and a rounded bottom. A straight strip of fabric is gathered between the side panels, creating a ruffled appearance when the bag is flat. The top edge of the bag is stitched with a straight strip of fabric so that when the drawstring is pulled, it creates a ruffle. One side panel is embroidered with "H T" in script above a decorative scroll, surrounded by a bullion-stitched leafy wreath. The edges of the panel are bordered by a pattern of interlocking rings stitched with French knots. The other panel is embroidered with a cornucopia-shaped vase filled with tall flowers. Embroidery stitches include bullion, satin, French knots, and outline.
Label TextAs women's gowns became more slim-fitting in the early 19th century, the use of pockets became impractical. In order to fulfill the need to carry items, reticules (small handbags) became very popular. Some women preferred plain reticules, while others opted for elaborate decorations. Most reticules closed with a drawstring, offering both a secure closure and a built-in handle for easy carrying. By the 1840s, skirts had become full once more and sewn-in pockets became a feature in many dresses. At this time reticules became simply an accessory, rather than a necessity.
