DescriptionShirt of pale olive color, with a subtle checked pattern of thin dark brown, red, and blue yarns. The fabric is flannel, with a warp of brown cotton and weft of wool in the olive color. One sleeve has been replaced with a different fabric---a green and blue striped flannel. The shirt has a fourteen-inch button placket front, with three pale blue china buttons. The placket is reinforced at the bottom with a semi-circular piece of the flannel. The collar is about 1 1/2 to two inches wide and is turned down. The front panel of the shirt curves up to the side seam at the hem; the back panel is cut square at the hem. The back of the shirt is gathered into a back shoulder yoke. The cuff on the original sleeve is cut on the bias; the replacement sleeve cuff is cut on the straight (this cuff is made of the olive flannel, not the replacement striped flannel).
NotesHistorical Note: This shirt was worn by Lieutenant Colonel Frank Cheney (1832-1909) when he was shot in the arm at the Battle of Antietam during the Civil War. That wound is why the fabric of one sleeve is replaced.Status
