DescriptionWriting sheet depicts trades in margins, surrounded by calligraphic flourishes and decorative cartouches. Trades include "LIMNING" "ENGRAVING" "MECHANICKS" "GLASS GRINDING" "BOTANY" "HUSBANDRY" "HAT-MAKING" and "PRINTING." The blank sheet has been filled in with quotations in block letters and in script.
NotesDate Note: The writing sheet engraved by Abel Buell was presumably printed by James Rivington in 1774. The following year, Rivington sued Buell and Buell fled to Florida, unable to pay the debt. Rivington apparently retained possession of the writing sheets until the case was settled in 1778. This may help to explain why the writing sheet was not used by Matthew Talcott at Mr. Kinne's School in Norwich until 1793. (Finlay 6/21/2011)

Subject Note: There are two impressions of the Abel Buell writing sheet in the Connecticut Historical Society. Both were filled in by Matthew Talcott while a student at Mr. Kinney's school in Norwich. The inscriptions and coloring of the two writing sheets differ. (Finlay 6/21/2011)
