DescriptionWood frame commercial buildings with awnings and louvered shutters at the corner of Main Street and Charter Oak Avenue. A few children, men, and women, some with baby carriages shaded with parasols, are on the sidewalk, and crossing the street. Most are wearing hats. Several signs are visible on the buildings: "100 DODGE & BREWER 100" "MEAT and FISH MARKET" "GROCERIES and PROVISIONS." "BALLANTINE & SONS. ALE and PORTER." On the striped awning:"F. E. DAY" Other signs read: "96 MELROSE & KEANE 9[6]" "WINES MELROSE & KEANE. LIQUORS". In the store windows some boxes are visible, on sidewalk crates are piled up near the door, some read: "BASS ALE / and / GUINNESS STOUT / ON DRAUGHT". There is a utility pole on the corner, some wires and a street light are visible. There are hitching posts along the sidewalk, and some trolley tracks are visible in the road. A moslty leafless tree is visible at left. At far left, a sign partially visible in background reads: "[S]TOVE / [J]ohn c. McMa]nus".
NotesSubject Notes: Frederick E. Day's saloon was located at 98 Main Street.
Charles N. Dodge and Charles H. Brewer were the proprietors of Dodge & Brewer at 100 Main Street from 1890-1897. The street numbers changed in 1898.
